Carpet One Floor & Home Canada Joins Forces With Homes For Heroes To Build Tiny Home Village For Military Veterans In Edmonton

BURLINGTON,ON – Carpet One Floor & Home Canada has partnered with Homes for Heroes Foundation to assist their efforts to build tiny house villages for veterans across Canada. The first project is Homes for Heroes village in Edmonton, scheduled to open in November 2021.

The locally-owned member store Red Deer Carpet One Floor & Home – along with fellow sponsor Shnier, Canada's leading floor covering company, are helping create the 20-house community in Edmonton. The village will provide 5,000-9,000 bed-nights for homeless veterans and help toward Home for Heroes’ mission of ending homeless among veterans who are transitioning from the military to civilian life.

The new Edmonton location comes on the heels of the successful Calgary Homes for Heroes village. Once it opens, the newest village community will consist of 20 300-square-foot tiny homes, each providing transitional housing for one veteran. Every tiny home will feature a kitchen, living room, bathroom and sleeping area. The homes face inward toward a green space courtyard area, meant to encourage peer-to-peer support.

The community will also feature a central resource centre, counseling office, a community garden and more. Carpet One Floor & Home Canada, Red Deer Carpet One Floor & Home and Shnier are providing all the flooring for the project.

“As we learned about the extraordinary number of Canadian Armed Forces vets who struggle with homelessness when they return to civilian life, we were convinced that the Homes for Heroes approach was wise and well-planned. We wanted to help,” said Andrew Wiebe, President of Red Deer Carpet One Floor and Home. “These tiny homes are special. They are functional and durable, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t beautiful. Helping create beautiful spaces is what we do every day, and it has been wonderful to be able to provide flooring and tile for these homes together with our partners at Shnier. We’re proud to be part of the team building this incredible community, and we are happy that as Homes for Heroes expands across the country, Carpet One Canada and our fellow co-op members will be part of the fundraising movement.”

Shnier is providing more than 7,000-square-feet of flooring for the homes and counseling office. “For us, the decision to participate was easy. My grandfathers, uncles and father were members of our Canadian Forces and I appreciate that brave commitment to our country,” said Shawn Trinier, CEO of GESCO Group of Companies, Shnier’s parent company. “The goal of Home for Heroes Foundation is clear, achievable and important to honor what we have been given through the efforts of our courageous men and women. This project also is a perfect fit for what we market, sell and the values we strive to lead by. The impact that this village can make is outstanding to this cause.”

For the main housing units, the group used Richmond Passport Milestone – a glue down, wood décor luxury vinyl plank selected for its waterproof core and long-lasting comfort. Shnier also provided backsplash tiles Casa Roma’s Ardesia Mix Mosaic Lisca, a dark grey porcelain in a chevron pattern.

Trinier continued: “Thank you to our valued partners Carpet One Floor & Home Canada and Dave Howard with Homes for Heroes, without their support we would not have been aware of this great cause and shared their boundless passion for it.”

Carpet One Floor & Home, Shnier and their teams are working alongside Atco, one of Canada’s leading modular and tiny home builders, on the build out of the project.

“Homes for Heroes is based in community involvement. Without our partners like Carpet One Canada and Shnier, we’d be unable to this. It takes a village to build a village, and we applaud their dedication to those who have served,” said Dave Howard, founder and CEO of Homes for Heroes. “This is our second development in Canada on our mission to come up with a sound, affordable solution to homelessness, particular among our veterans. This Edmonton village and the ones to follow will give veterans a place to move in and get their lives in order, then move out and make room for the next of their fellow vets. Our residents are looking for the hand up approach.”
